After participating in the Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade, and a pancake breakfast, it was off to our match with our guests the Old Golds of Saginaw. It was a warm muggy afternoon, and the best crowd of cranks in recent memory attended.
The match was a defensive battle the entire afternoon, highlighted by numerous well played catches by both Clubs. Some of the finest outfield plays were made by “Honest Jon” Van Hoek, and “Splinter” Stein. The Wahoo’s of Royal Oak were the first to tally any aces, with 2 in the 2nd inning, 2 more aces in the 4th inning, and 1 in both the 5th & 6th. This gave the Wahoos a short lived 6 – 0 lead, the fine strikers of the Saginaw Club tallied an ace in the 7th inning, and put together an impressive 3 tally surge in the 9th inning that fell just short. “Doc” Schuster and “Foghorn” Palmer shared the fine hurling for the Royal Oak club.
In total 13 Wahoo ballists played, plus 12 Old Golds, and the score was 4 tallies to 6 in favor of the Wahoo’s. This can better be translated as: 25 or 6 to 4 ! (puns are included on this site at no extra charge!)
Follow the Wahoo’s to Saginaw for a re-match of these 2 fine teams on Sunday, 8th of August.
