The Match between the host Wahoos of Royal Oak and their very worthy opponent, the Mighty River Hogs of Midland was played on 26th June. The forecasted rain, once again, thankfully did not come this day.
As per usual with these 2 fine Clubs, the Match was a very close, low tally affair. This due to outstanding plays in the field by all. Midland tallied first with 1 ace in the 2nd inning, the Wahoos answered with 2 aces in their half of the 2nd, to take the narrow advantage. The guests tied the game in the 3rd, but that was short lived as the Royal Oak Club tallied 2 more in the 4th inning. The River Hogs kept their hosts from tallying for 5 frames, and once again tied the match with hard earned aces in the 6th & 8th innings.
Neither team could get an ace in the 9th, so a 10 inning was agreed upon by both clubs.
After Midland could not tally in their last chance, the Wahoo strikers started their 10th inning with 2 safely hit balls by “Treetrunk” Brown, and “Flash” Gorman. “Bones” Bolton then struck the ball well, making 1st sack safely, but a hand down was gained at 2nd sack by Midland. Runners were now at 1st & 3rd sack when “Honest Pete” Van Hoek struck the ball sharply to the out – field to tally the winning ace by “Treetrunk” Brown for Royal Oak ! The final account: 5 – 4 in 10 innings.
A very well played, gentlemanly, and entertaining match by both Clubs. The Wahoo’s will make the long wagon ride to Midland on 11 September for a rematch that promises to be another close one.
